Passage 9

In plain words

Many troubles and losses keep standing in man's way. If man is to live as man, he must face many troubles and losses. Only when he faces them, holds fast to his humanness and wins through does human birth reach its fulfilment. So we must root out the bad qualities called demonic nature that lie within humanness. For this Tyāgarāja too said: “Rāma! In every yuga You went on playing many kinds of drama to root out Ahaṅkāra. You are beyond the three times. ‘Yathovāco nivartante aprāpyamanasā saha’. You are beyond Manas and speech.”

You are beyond the reach of speech; can even Brahmā and the gods praise Your deeds? O Kṛṣṇa! I wait for You; hear my plea and protect me, Lord. You brought back and gave the guru's son whom Death had carried off; You crushed the pride of Death, You set Vasudeva and Devakī free from prison; when that long-eyed Draupadī cried out, ‘Hā Kṛṣṇa!’, You saved her; well done, well done, You guarded the Pāṇḍavas. You ended Kucela's distress, You took away the crookedness of ugly Kubjā, You saved sixteen thousand lovely women.

When we go near God, God's qualities come to us and bring us comfort

What does ‘Kṛṣṇa looked after sixteen thousand gopīs’ mean? He protected them and went on caring for them in every way. Not only the sixteen thousand: He goes on caring for the whole world. All who went on offering themselves to Him, calling ‘Kṛṣṇa!’, He went on protecting. But those who have not surrendered He does not protect. What is the reason? For everything there is a law of its own. We see a fire on a far-off hill.
