In plain words
Concentration comes only by fostering Prema. It is only because Prema is little that concentration does not settle. Another small example. A man is driving a car along. The people sitting in the car are talking about many things. The driver gives fitting answers to their questions. He laughs, he talks, he answers. But he drives the car on. Do you see? That same driver, when a big crowd of people comes in the way and the road is narrow, does not talk and does not answer. ‘Don't you talk,’ he says, and drives on very carefully. What is the reason? The crowd here is large, and the road is narrow. Lest some accident happen, lest some harm come to himself, because his love for himself is great, there is greater concentration there.
When you turn your Prema to God, concentration settles
In the same way, when Prema for God is great, one moves aside. However great the love you have for yourself, however carefully you drive to escape your dangers, when you place that same love on God, your concentration has no room to waver. So it is only because Prema is little that concentration does not settle. The more Prema you foster, the more concentration settles. So, the fault of those whose concentration does not settle is simply that they have no right Prema for God! You say that God is Prema. A mother loves her children. A child loves its mother. But when hunger comes, the mother herself must eat for the mother, and the child itself must eat for the child. Just because her love for the child is great, if the mother eats for the child's sake, will the child's hunger be appeased? But today Prema stays as Prema. They use concentration for their own sake. The feeling, ‘I belong to God,’ does not come. They write in their letters, ‘I am Yours, You are mine.’
