In plain words
But today, under the influence of the Kali age, people want a result for every little thing. ‘I did japa, but no result came! I did vratas, and still no result came to me!’ some lament. Regarding God as a stranger, you are doing hired work. So you are a hired labourer. You are not His own.
We must become God's own!
You must become His own. You yourself must be the master. That alone is the true teaching of Vedānta, the spiritual path. As long as you stay far from God and think you are a stranger, even the fruit will not come to you. One must think, ‘I am His.’ Though Vibhīṣaṇa was a rākṣasa, he came running to Rāma, saying, ‘Swami! I am Yours, I am Yours.’ Hanumān, Jāmbavān, Sugrīva, Aṅgada, Lakṣmaṇa, every one who heard these words, objected. ‘Swami! He is a rākṣasa. He is coming running to You only to deceive You somehow. Do not trust him,’ they said. This is a worldly view. Rāma's view was not that. Whoever it may be! ‘Whoever has said even once, “I am Yours,” him I shall protect,’ He said. Merely saying ‘I am Yours’ in words will not do. This is not for deceiving God. You must live it practically and show it. That is why He took Vibhīṣaṇa under His protection. Not only did He take him under His protection at once; He gave him a promise as well. ‘Vibhīṣaṇa! I shall slay Rāvaṇa and make you king of Laṅkā,’ He said. When he had once given himself up as ‘I am Yours’, He gave him so great an honour. Quietly Sugrīva drew near Rāma: ‘Vibhīṣaṇa came from the city of Laṅkā. The moment he fell at Your feet saying once, “I am Yours,” You gave him so great a boon! But suppose his heart itself changed, and he handed Sītā over to You: “Forgive me, Swami! I am Yours!” If Rāvaṇa himself came saying this and fell at Your feet, what would You give him?’ he asked.
