In plain words
Good resolve is the wish-fulfilling tree, good conduct is the wish-fulfilling cow!
Keeping the wish-fulfilling tree beside you, why do you go to so much trouble for a banana plant? The wish-fulfilling tree and the wish-fulfilling cow are within us. They are not somewhere outside! Good resolve is the wish-fulfilling tree, good conduct is the wish-fulfilling cow! Both of these, the wish-fulfilling cow called good conduct and the wish-fulfilling tree called good resolve, are right with us. If we tend them well, all our wishes will keep on being fulfilled. In our hand there is a 100-rupee note. This 100-rupee note looks at you and laughs, it seems! ‘Hey! You madman! Why are you staring at me so intently like this? How many faces I have seen before I came to you. I shall leave you again and go to someone else. I am not one to stay with any one person. Why do you take pride, thinking, this is my 100 rupees?’ It is something that keeps moving on, this form of Lakṣmī. The nature of money is to move about. Morality, though, comes to us, it seems; it keeps growing day by day, it seems, and does not leave, it seems! Money comes and goes; morality comes and grows. This wealth does not stay in one hand for even a single moment. It keeps going to everyone, it seems! Some people, meaning to tie her down somehow, bring in all kinds of tricks. This Lakṣmī has two names: Dhanalakṣmī and Daridralakṣmī. Once she went to a person, to a person full of greed, it seems! When the time came for her to come back, she felt very sad, it seems! Right beside her, Daridralakṣmī too appeared. Dhanalakṣmī asked, it seems, ‘O devotee! Do you want her? Or do you want me?’ He was very frightened. If he says ‘I want you’, she may come and torment him again; or else, if he says to this Daridralakṣmī, ‘Mother! I want you’, this one may run away: he was gripped by great fear. His Bhakti towards both was equal. ‘Mother! Both of you are very beautiful indeed. Please walk a little towards me and come,’ he said to Dhanalakṣmī. Then he said, ‘Please walk away over there, Daridralakṣmī!’ Lakṣmīdevī is very beautiful at the time she comes. Daridralakṣmī is very beautiful at the time she goes. So he called them both ‘beauties’, it seems! Then both were pleased and went away!
