Passage 11

In plain words

‘The very next moment you know the secret, the mind itself changes, sir!’

If we lessen the luggage called desires, our journey of life will be comfortable

As long as he does not know the mind, this fellow goes on making journeys in many ways. He keeps making efforts. For one who has truly recognised the nature of the mind, everything has become known! He wonders what the mind is. This is a kind of worry. This is not a cloth. This is a bundle of threads; not thread, it is cotton. Cotton, thread, cloth: the three are one! So without this cotton, thread cannot be drawn; without thread, cloth cannot be woven. So cotton-thoughts, threads-desires, cloth-mind. So bundle of desires makes mind. If you pull out each of these threads, there is no longer any cloth. That is why the railway department has written up in the compartment, ‘Less luggage, more comfort, make travel a pleasure’. ‘Life itself is a journey; desires are the luggage!’ So if we lessen this luggage called desires, our journey will be comfortable. So if one comes to know the nature of this mind well, such a one has no worry at all. He becomes very happy. Many people say, ‘I have freedom.’

The greatest strength of all is the strength of God!

No one has freedom, except God alone! Where is your freedom? There is none! To do any one task at all, you have to depend on someone else! You think, ‘My house, my store.’ But though you think all the provisions in the store are yours, if your hunger is to be satisfied you have to depend on the cook! So where is your freedom? If he cooks, you eat; if not, you go hungry! So you have no freedom at all! Everything is bondage! Why? Because of desires! Hunger and thirst too are a desire! Hunger is a disease. Food is the medicine. Thirst is a disease. Water is its medicine. So what lives with disease is bhava. Bhava itself is a disease. The physician of the disease of bhava, who cures that disease, is God alone! So He alone has that all-knowingness.
