Passage 5

In plain words

We must make the effort it takes to attain, through humanness, the divinity that is in humanness!

How can a person who cannot love his living fellow man love God, whom he does not see?

Three kings came to see Jesus, born on the twenty-fifth of December. These three expressed three kinds of feeling. One king looked at this child and concluded, ‘This one will grow into a person who loves God.’ The second king concluded, ‘God Himself will love this child.’ The third king concluded, ‘This one is God Himself.’ The first went by the feeling of the body. The second went by the feeling of the mind. The third went by the feeling of the Ātma. The one you think you are is the physical body. The one others think you are is the mental body. The one you really are. That is Atma. To change humanness into divinity, we must first root out the demonic nature and the beast nature. The man of today worships even a lifeless stone and believes even in lifeless forms. He loves even lifeless forms. But he does not set about loving the living man. This is Jesus' first teaching. Though he sees his neighbours every day, he cannot love them. There is no trusting at all your claim that you will love God, whom you do not see. How can a man who cannot love even the person he sees alive every day love God, lifeless to him and unseen by him? This is impossible.

Why go searching for God, who is there wherever you look?

Only the person who has loved the living will set about loving the lifeless. So our spiritual path too must begin with the living.
