Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

It is not your property. It is God's property. Love is God. Teachers must tell the children.

start the day with love fill the day with love spend the day with love end the day with love this is the way to god.

This you must tell them. Quarrels must not arise among children. They must not grow hatred towards one another. Such divine, fresh, sacred feelings must be given to the children's hearts.

You who give them must practise them too. If you give it to them without practising it, the children of these days are very clever: ‘Brother, the teacher is telling us, but he himself does not practise it,’ he says. Teachers must be very careful. If these feelings are in the children, there is no use in your telling them. It becomes bookish knowledge. It becomes superficial knowledge. It must come as practical knowledge. Teachers must practise what they tell the children. If you tell the children not to quarrel and quarrel among yourselves; if a father, smoking a cigarette, to his son: ‘Hey! You must not smoke cigarettes, it is bad,’ if he says this, what will the boy say? ‘If you smoke it yourself, knowing it is bad, what is wrong if I smoke?’ he will say. These are the root causes of children going astray. Teachers do not tell their own children. They go to meetings: ‘Bad books must not be given to children; they are being spoiled. Character is vanishing,’ they say. Practise it yourself; then you will have the right to tell. First set right the children in your own home. Children are very wide awake. That is, their intellects are sharp. They have a lot of knowledge. They are killing knowledge. In Vedānta 4 steps have been set out. 1st step knowledge, 2nd step skill, 3rd step balance, 4th step insight.

First of all, knowledge. Turn knowledge into skill. Balance comes rightly. But unfortunately, because the children of today all do these, bad look, bad hearing, bad thoughts, bad actions, it is being killed. They are spoiling all their knowledge. That is why balance is lost. When balance is lost, they fall into great hardship and loss in life. When there is balance, life is in balance. We must be ready to face everything. life is challenge, meet it. life is a game, play it. In a game of football there are two goals, one at that end and one at this end. These goals have two limits. If the ball goes within those limits, it is a goal. If it goes beyond those two limits, it is out. Who are playing this football? Satya, Dharma, Prema, Śānti and Ahiṃsā are on one side; lust, anger, greed, pride and envy, these six, are on the other side. Both sides kick it with their feet. Good and bad. How long do they kick it? They kick it as long as there is air in it. When it is gone, they pick it up in their hands. That air is ego. If that ego is there, everyone kicks it with their feet. They show it no respect. Ego must go. This is what is called humility. What should that humility be like? Nodding your head and saying "namaskāram" is not enough. A mind free of ego, attachment and anger. A mind free of ego, a mind free of attachment: that is true humility. Today ego is in excess. Of all the hot things in the world, ego is the hottest. Even the āvakāya pickle of Guntur and Bezwada does not have so much heat. If you eat this hot thing, you will have to drink water. What is that water? You will have to drink the water called worldly desires. By that, health is ruined. First of all you must honour your parents. Mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava. You need not search for God separately. For anyone at all, there is no God greater than the mother. That is why Śaṅkara said, ‘There are wicked sons and daughters, but there is no wicked mother.’ If you bring tears to the eyes of the mother who looked on you as her life, as the life of her life, and raised you, will your children not bring tears to your eyes tomorrow! This reaction, resound and reflection cannot be escaped. We must be careful from the very first. Without making too many acquaintances, without bad feelings, without joining bad company: see good, do good, enjoy good. This is the true value of humanness.
