To see a light that shines brightly, we need not look for another light. In the same way, to seek the knowledge of the Ātma, which shines by its own light, no other knowledge is needed. Every human being is already one who has the knowledge of his own true nature. It is only because man cannot recognise that divine, glorious principle of Jñāna that he goes yearning after other kinds of knowledge. All the differences seen in creation are only the manifestation of the one thing that has no difference. For difference and non-difference there is only the one cause. All impermanent things rest upon this, which is steadfast and stable. The whole of creation is a stage for a play. The director and the actor are God alone. It is God Himself who has put on the costumes of all forms. All the forms in the world are only God's costumes. When anyone blames you or praises you, you must recognise the truth that it is God, in that form, who blames you and praises you. All the good and the bad in the world are aspects of God's own conscious nature. But man, unable to see this inner truth, sinks and swells: "Someone is reviling me; someone is extolling me." No, no. You must not be deceived by seeing the costume. Behind all the costumes, it is God's own reflection that makes this play go on. This truth is a thing every person has to recognise. Though names and forms, dress and speech, appear different, recognise the truth that all are persons who belong to one humanness, and act on it.

All things are parts of God. "Mamaivāṃśo jīvaloke jīvabhūtas sanātanaḥ." God declares, "All are parts of Me." God is the embodiment of Prema. Prema alone is His nature. It is His Prema that is made manifest as the whole world. The Prema in all is one. Just as God makes His Prema manifest, every human being must make his Prema manifest. Prema has been called beyond the reach of speech and mind. Prema has been called indescribable. This Prema cannot be gained by the power of the intellect or by cleverness. The shining sun has to be seen by the shining sun itself. In the same way, God, who is the embodiment of Prema, has to be gained through Prema alone. Nothing in this world can be found more precious than that. But God is beyond the guṇas. That is why His Prema is beyond the guṇas. But unfortunately the Prema of man today is bound up with the guṇas, and so he gives room to attachment and hatred. We love with some expectation of a return. Prema that loves expecting a return looks like a business. Prema is not a matter of business. It is not just giving a loan and taking a loan. If you want to gain such sacred Prema, it must be gained only by a sacred feeling.

Prema is like a compass. Wherever you place this compass, it points only to the north. In the same way, man's Prema must be turned towards God in every circumstance. That is true Prema. To swell up over troubles, worries, sorrows, joy, delight or income is not the mark of Prema. In Prema there are no differences of more and less. Just as man earns money by some business or some job, man must earn Prema only by making his own Prema manifest. So it is only a weakness to think that Prema will be gained by carrying out sādhanas on this path or that path. By sādhanas we may achieve worldly results, but the principle of Prema that belongs to God has to be achieved by Prema alone. There is no language for anyone to describe the principle of God's Prema as this or as that. It is beyond poetry. So they called it beyond feeling, free of the three guṇas. A person who is fully under water cannot speak to anyone. When he is in water only up to his throat, he can speak to some extent. When people in the world today say that God is like this or like that, that He is this sort or that sort, these are only teachings taught by one who has not fully experienced Ānanda. Those who have truly tasted the principle of God's Prema cannot describe it. That is why the Veda says, "Yathovācā nivartante aprāpyamanasā saḥ": the principle of God's Prema is beyond the mind and beyond speech. This Prema has nothing to do with the tāmasic guṇa, the rājasic guṇa or the sāttvic guṇa. It is not coarse or dull like the tāmasic guṇa, nor full of anger. Nor is it cool and smooth like the sāttvic. There is no way to compare this Prema with the guṇas. God's Prema is a Prema that is pure, unmoving and selfless.
