Passage 6

In plain words

Thinking, "Swami is not watching", people do something or other somewhere. God does not have just two eyes. He has many eyes. Your own eye too is the eye of God. You do wrong without knowing it. You are cheating yourself. That itself is cheating God. If you trust yourself, you will be able to trust God too. We must develop this faith. There is nothing in the world that God cannot do. God can do anything. Feelings that draw that principle of Prema to you must arise in you. To draw it, some purity is needed. There is a magnet. We have placed a piece of iron here. But that magnet does not attract this piece of iron. For that reason alone it is not right to say the magnet has no power. There is rust and dust in this piece of iron. If you remove this rust and dust, the magnet will attract it. In the same way, God is everywhere. In the intellect there is all this rust and dust. Clean it. God will surely attract it. That fault is in you, not in God. You must change your feelings. How must you change your feelings? You must change them into the feeling that everything is God. There is a small padyam in a śataka.

A kinsman who is of no use in need, a god who grants no boon though you bow to him, a horse that will not run when you mount it in battle: give them up at once, O Sumati!

A horse that does not run when you mount it must be let go. A god who gives no boon when you bow to him must be given up. A kinsman who is of no use in troubles must be given up. People take only these three, the ones that suit their need. What is the last word? Sumati! All these are for one who has good sense. If, lacking good sense, someone gives up the horse because it did not run when he mounted it, and gives up the god because he gave no boon when he bowed, what a fool he is! First of all, there must be sumati. Good feelings must come. Good sense must come. When one who has good sense mounts it, the horse runs. One who has good sense thinks it over, "I do not know how to ride; why should I mount a horse?", and lets it be. Only the one with bad sense mounts a horse without knowing how, and falls down. First of all, good sense must come. Only the one in whom good sense has come gets a good result. Victory comes to him in everything.

Today is Mahāśivarātri. We must develop good, auspicious thoughts in us. Our conduct must be pure. Our feelings must be pure. We must not be filled all the time with narrow feelings. For man today tyāga has become nothing. Three things are very important for every person. Love of one's country, tyāga, and a divine outlook. The oneness of these three is humanness. Knowing is the mind, doing is the body, being the Sākṣī is the Ātma. Humanness is the blending of body, mind and Ātma. We must recognise the right principle in all three. The divinity in all three is one. That is unity in diversity. We must recognise this principle. If we understand the principle of the atom well, we will understand everything. If we know what this is made of, there will be no more arguments. Cloth is made of cotton. Cotton itself became thread. When thread was woven, it became cloth. So cloth, thread and cotton, these three are one. We must recognise the truth that in my body, mind and Ātma, in all of them, the principle of the atom is one. It has been said: "Subtler than the subtle, vaster than the vast." If you plant a small banyan seed, it grows into a big tree. Where was the tree before this? It was in the small banyan seed itself. Within the big seed comes the small banyan seed. From this atom it became vast. From the vast it changes back into the atom. So the atom and the vast are both one. It is only a defect of vision; if you truly look, the essence is one. So first of all know this principle of the atom. It suits reason too. Many atheists argue, "Where is God?" This is a meaningless argument. There is nowhere that is not God. Even the one who asks "Where is God?" is God. The form that asks is God. The one who reviles is God too. The one who does harm is God too. Everyone is God. One who has recognised the truth that all is one has recognised the great principle.

All these differences only arose in individuals, only grew out of food and habits; in God there is never any difference. For that very purpose God created this whole universe. He created it in wondrous variety. He created every material that is needed. He gave food to eat. He gave water to drink. He gave clothes to wear. He gave a house to live in. He gave everything. Nothing is lacking. "My children! I have given all this for you alone. Take it yourselves. I do not enter into it. Enjoy all of it yourselves.
