In plain words
For these three karaṇas to become pure, spirituality, morality and the practice of Dharma are needed. Only then is the purity of the three karaṇas established. Only one who can attain that purity of the three karaṇas can attain divinity. If any one of these karaṇas is even slightly tainted, one can never attain divinity. For the water in a pot to leak away, there is no need for ten holes; one hole is enough. Children study. They get good marks in all subjects. If you get low marks in a single subject, you have as good as failed! In the same way, if any one karaṇa among the three is even slightly impure, impurity enters them all. So every human being must cultivate these three, spirituality, morality and the practice of Dharma, for the purity of the three karaṇas. Otherwise there is no difference at all between man and beast. This one is a two-footed beast, that one a four-footed beast. So there will be no difference at all between the beast and us. If you would recognise the truth that you are a human being and make it fruitful, you must cultivate spirituality, morality and the practice of Dharma. ‘Of all creatures, birth as a human is rare’: how sacred is human birth! Such a human birth people are turning into nothing but a demon's birth. Even the monkey laughs at him: ‘O madman! Born a man, you are forgetting Mādhava! Born a monkey, I keep Rāma in my thoughts. I take part in Rāma's work. Every hair on my body is filled with the Name of Rāma. I am better than you!’ Today man goes through so much study, develops so much cleverness, wins so great a name; and in the end, what does he achieve? He achieves nothing. The whole of life is unrest. Beasts, birds and wild creatures all enjoy Śānti. But for man Śānti is very far away. What is the reason? With desires beyond all limit he ruins his mind. Only one desire should we have. If that desire for God is there, every desire is fulfilled. If we have gold in hand, we can have any number of ornaments made. Today he forgets the gold. He longs for the ornaments.
