Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We never listen to words that bring joy to the ear. Censure of others, abuse of others, words that mock others: these are what we listen to. These ears are going astray. Next, speech. It holds every power. Speech must be used with proper care. Thinking carefully how we suffer when we hear certain words from others, and in what ways it hurts our mind, we must bring out the words we speak. This power of speech has reaction, reflection, resound. Just as others suffer from your words, you too will suffer. When we speak words full of evil feelings and evil thoughts, they come back and hurt us more than they hurt the people outside. That is why it is said, you can’t always oblige but you can speak always obligingly. So we must bring out good words. In this way man is misusing the endless powers within him.

To give meaning to one's humanness: one tongue, one word

This is the weakness in the young people of today! One minute he speaks very nicely. The very next minute he says the opposite. This is a disgrace to his very humanness. To give meaning to one's humanness: one tongue, one word. In good and bad, in gain and loss, in fame and ill fame, one must keep equanimity. In the young people of today, passion and haste run high, and through evil desires they are turning wicked. They study a great deal, it is true. But they cannot recognise the truth that these qualities are not in their studies. In the world there are many great scholars. Today, in the world, the brilliant minds and those who have won fame in many ways: how did this fame come to them? It is by their conduct that they were able to win that fame. In whatever country you look, educated people are to be seen in large numbers.
