Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The meaning of our festivals is to nourish our life with sacred feelings. Every festival has an inner meaning.

Live in the freedom of a human being, not the freedom of a beast

Many young men and young women think this. ‘What use is it to be born a human being and not be free?’, so they think. A little fish lives freely in the water. A little bird moves about freely in the sky. Every beast born in the forest roams at will. ‘Why should man not have freedom, why should he not move about in freedom?’: among the young the shower of questions is heavy. True! Fish, birds and beasts are free. But what kind of freedom do they enjoy? The fish enjoys the freedom of a fish. Beasts enjoy the freedom of beasts. Birds enjoy the freedom of birds. You are a human being, so enjoy the freedom of a human being; do not enjoy the freedom of a beast. To say, “I am a human being,” and roam about like a beast: is that true freedom? You too must enjoy the freedom of a human being. Do not enjoy freedom as a beast. The freedom of a beast is very dangerous. If we enjoy what the beasts enjoy because they enjoy it, we shall turn into beasts ourselves. The freedom a human being should have is the freedom of a human being. What is the freedom of a human being? A human being has certain limits. He must enter the path of Satya. He must follow Dharma. He must foster Prema. He must live in Śānti. He must achieve Ahiṃsā. Within these five, enjoy your freedom. This is the supreme principle of the five elements.

The whole world is made of the five elements!

This whole world is made of the five elements! The mountains are made of rock.
