Passage 14

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Mind, speech and body. We need the unity of these three. We must also know the feeling of the words. Nobody recognises the feelings in the words. Fortunately, in the Telugu songs that Tyāgarāja wrote, the people of Andhra recognise the meanings well. The reason is that they know Telugu. The Tamils, who do not know Telugu, are at a high level in music. The people of Andhra, who know the meaning, do not know Carnatic music so well. The Tamils, who do not know the meaning, sing Carnatic music with enthusiasm. If one who knows both enters that music hall, his head spins. Tyāgarāja sang once. ‘If I do not praise You, what do You lack, O Rāma!’, so he sang. ‘Crores upon crores in the world praise You. Nothing is lessened if I do not praise You. If I do not praise You, what do You lack?’, he said. In this Tamil, the letters ‘ta’, ‘ga’, ‘da’ and ‘ka’ are all one! That is not their fault. ‘If I eat pakōḍā, what do You lack, O Rāma!’, someone sang. What a difference there is! ‘Pogaḍakuṇṭē’, ‘pakōḍā tiṇṭē!’ That is why there must be a fitting unity of feeling, tāla and rāga.

Man must live as man

You are students. You are studying. With what aim are you studying? You want to enjoy life in your future with happiness and Śānti. Besides that, you must also recognise the inner meaning that is in study. That is saṃskṛti. You must know it fully. We see and experience many things in the world. From the day TV and radio began, the hearts of men have been turning foul. Yet there is no fault in them. The filth is in those who make the programmes. The government too does not understand it rightly. Science & Technology. Tricknology, to spoil people. Nobody should bring in what spoils people. The minds of the young have become badly defiled. Do not watch TV while you eat.
