Passage 15

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Do not hold much conversation of any other kind. If someone speaks to you, you should only answer. You must give your parents due respect. On that radio and TV nobody tells you to respect your parents. O you mad fellow! In childhood itself is youth, in youth itself is old age. ‘You yourself are a grandfather, you yourself a father, you yourself a son. Why should I give respect. I too have grown up; I should receive respect, I am not one to give it’: you must not think so. This is ignorance. However big you become, you are your father's son; you are not bigger than your father, are you! Give your father due respect. Give your mother due respect. Honour the elders who come to your home. When elders come to the house and you go on watching TV as you please, is that a sign of goodness? You are watching TV. A friend of your father's has come to see your father. At once you must switch off the TV. You must go and greet him. You must find out why he has come and tell your father. Abbē! There is no such humility at all. Even if thieves come in, this fellow will not leave the TV. Could you not put the concentration you give to this on humanity instead! Born a human being, you are forgetting humanity. Man today must live as man. More than that, he must become an excellent human being. Let us, as human beings, live as human beings. You need not become God. If man lives as man, you yourself will turn into God.

The inner meaning of spirituality is to enquire into yourself

You must first recognise what it is that, when you rely on it, gives you what you long for. You want rivers. Water must flow in the rivers. For that you pray to the rivers. This is great ignorance. Without rain, how can there be rivers? How can you expect the rivers to flow without becoming worthy of the grace of Varuṇa? In the same way, only when you experience inner contentment does outer contentment come of its own accord. If you want to enjoy happiness and Śānti in life, you must first experience the happiness and Śānti within.
