In plain words

Such brothers there should be.’ After a while Bharata came running. He came very sad. Kausalyā asked, ‘My dear! You should be happy that you won; why are you sad? What is the reason?’ ‘Mother! When I was about to lose, my elder brother, wanting to make me win, lost and handed me the victory. That my brother lost pains me very much. Is it not very sad that my brother lost for my sake!’ said Bharata. If the younger brother wins, the elder brother should rejoice. It does not matter if the elder loses for the younger's sake. He should make his younger brother win. These are the ideals in the Rāmāyaṇa. But brothers today are not like that. In those days the brothers Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa were in the Supreme state. Brothers today go to the Supreme court. That is not it. We must go to the Supreme state. Brothers must live in unity. They must live in mutual affection. They must be accommodating; there must be adjustment and understanding. Today adjustment and understanding are not seen anywhere. In the Rāmāyaṇa of those days there are many such ideals. If the younger brother won, the elder rejoiced; if the elder lost, the younger grieved. Such a principle of Prema must grow again.

The consciousness that is in all is in you too

Students! Girl students! All of you must foster the principle of Prema. Today is Śivarātri. What does that mean? One must foster the auspicious quality. ‘Lokāḥ samastāḥ sukhino bhavantu’: everyone must always be happy. One must not think, ‘I alone should be happy.’ All must be happy. Every human being is a member of society; he is not above society. Every human being is the very form of the whole. Without society, where is the individual? Every individual is the very form of the whole. We must seek the welfare of society. You must not strive for your own selfish ends. Such things must grow more and more in these students. Wherever you are travelling, if someone is suffering, you must take that suffering on yourselves and help.
