Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If all who come were devotees, there would be no room in Praśānti Nilayam. Not all who come are devotees. Only those who are pleasing to Sai's word are devotees. So I am searching again in the same way. I keep on searching, I keep on searching. For whom? For the true human being. Who is a human being? Is he merely one who bears legs, arms and a form!

As one sees silk-cotton pods and mistakes them for mangoes, as one sees wild cane and chews it, thinking it sugarcane, as a young woman sees the shape of stones and mistakes them for sugar candy, do not be deceived by the form: character itself, this is the form of man.

When we look at such character, humanness is seen nowhere. You must clearly recognise how holy, how pure and how ideal humanness is. With this very thing in view: jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabham. All of you are studying. You hope for great jobs. You mean to go abroad. You are earning as much money as you want. You think, dhanamūlam idaṃ jagat. In earlier times they believed, dharmamūlam idaṃ jagat. In the modern age it is dhanamūlam idaṃ jagat. But Sai does not think of either money or Dharma as the world. In the present situation, dayamūlam idaṃ jagat: compassion is needed. Not money. Not Dharma. You may give some money in charity. That is not the goal of our life. Compassion is our goal. Because everyone has a heart. Hṛt + daya = hṛdaya. Only the heart filled with compassion is the true human heart. Otherwise dogs, jackals and monkeys have a heart. The heart joined with compassion is humanness.

Every human being must fill the heart with compassion. He must share this compassion with others, not only enjoy it himself. A humanness without both compassion and Prema is no humanness at all.
