In plain words
When you look at other women and laugh, will not someone else look at your own people and laugh? Some people, though they have no work, sit in front of the shops in the towns. They look at these people shopping, or at those passing this way and that, and keep laughing for nothing. For those who have such a wicked eye, when their own women go shopping some day, someone else laughs at the sight of them. So this reaction, resound, reflection cannot be escaped. They must, without fail, go through this fruit of karma. Through these they drive away even God. Why? Those who bring dishonour cannot stay in the presence of God. So we must keep our laughter under control.
Not only that. We must keep our words too under control. Where to speak, and in what way. Then again, when women are passing, some people sing crazy songs. Is that what you should be singing with that tongue? What a holy tongue it is! What laughable words! By using these words you are ruining your fame. You are falling into dishonour. You are becoming nothing but a laughing-stock. So we must keep words, looks and laughter under some control. If we are to win honour, the actions that befit honour must be in us. Only when we are good does our honour grow.
Honour and dishonour: we must take both alike. Good and bad: we must take both alike. Fame and ill fame: we must take both alike. That is man's equal-mindedness. Only then is it possible for this man to become Mādhava. There is the opportunity. But when he is called a man and behaves against what a man should do, he turns into a beast. He came from the beast. He is going back to the place of the beast. You must go forward, not backward. Some officers get a revertion. Instead of a promotion a revertion comes. What is the reason for this? There is some fault. Only when there is a fault does a revertion come. If there is no fault, a promotion comes. A small office, a worldly job. If promtion and revertion come even in this, how much more closely must we look to ourselves within the Grace of God!
