Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

How? Only by God's grace! Through it you are handed, beforehand, the knowledge that the fire is there. You must believe that fire too is nothing but the divine principle.

Sat-Cit-Ānanda is in man himself

Fire too is one of the five elements. So the ahaṃ enters into each and every one. We must enquire where this principle of ahaṃ was born from. The ahaṃ was born from the Ātma. What was born from the ahaṃ? Saṅkalpa was born. What was born from saṅkalpa? Speech was born. Speech was born of saṅkalpa, saṅkalpa of the ahaṃ, the ahaṃ of the Ātma. Taken this way, this is the tripuṭi. This speech is the Ātma's great-grandson. Saṅkalpa is the grandson. The ahaṃ is the son. All this is the kinship of one single family! The grandson, the great-grandson and the son have a right in the Ātma's property. What is the Ātma's property? Sat-Cit-Ānanda. This Sat-Cit-Ānanda has been shared out in full to the son, the grandson and the great-grandson. Man must not think, ‘There is no Ānanda in me.’ It is your right. You long to be, for ever, one who is Satya and eternal. That is Being. That is your right. What is Cit? Prajñānaṃ Brahma. That Prajñāna is in you yourself. So there is no need to search for where Sat-Cit-Ānanda is. Within you yourself it dwells, this Sat-Cit-Ānanda. But because you cannot recognise it, Ajñāna grips and torments you.

Ajñāna vanishes only when we enquire into the Ātma and the not-Ātma

Students! There is a little story about this. A wedding was going on. The bride's party were in one house. The bridegroom's party were staying in another house. In between, a kinsman came forward to act as the link between them. Every time, he would go and bully the bride's people. ‘What is this, sir? You are not serving us tiffin and coffee at the proper times. We thought you would hold a very grand wedding. You are doing nothing at all; you are not taking the least care!’ So he would make a great fuss. Another time he would come to the other side.
