In plain words
Without Prema there is no life at all. Without Prema people cannot stay together with one another at all. For unity, Prema alone is the chief thing and the standard. Prema and unity are vital to every human being.
Without the two eyes called Prema and unity men have gone blind on the earth today.
There is no unity, there is no Prema. How then can we lead our lives? Students! First of all you must foster Prema. If that one thing, Prema, is there, it will bring all the rest by itself. You write a letter. You put the letter in an envelope. Without gum you cannot seal the envelope. So it is gum that sticks one thing to another. That gum is Prema. That Prema sticks one person to another. A bond forms between one person and another. Unfortunately Bhārata has won independence but has not been able to win unity.
If you think, ‘What is in all is my own Ātma,’ no turmoil or violence of any kind can arise
You all know this. Long ago the emperor Aśoka was the emperor who ruled Bhārata. You must have seen it: the emblem he set up has lions' heads on four sides. He had certain customs. On each of his birthday festivals he used to give a great prize to one or another of his vassal kingdoms. One day his fiftieth birthday came. He sent for all the vassal kings. A vassal king came from the east. He submitted to the emperor Aśoka, ‘My lord! I have earned three times more than I earned before, and brought it to your treasury. I have brought three times more in cash,’ he said. The king of kings sat there as though he were pleased. Then he called another vassal king. He stood up. ‘Great king! I cut down most of the expenses that had to be met, cut the officials' salaries, saved up the money, and have brought six times more for your birthday festival,’ he said.
