In plain words
He took his father's word. ‘Morning and evening you must do sandhyāvandana. Whatever the circumstances, do not forget this,’ the father said. Saying ‘All right,’ he gave his word. He thought it would be enough just to get out of India. Satya is the life-breath of a word. Satya itself was not there. He went and stayed 5 years. He forgot the Indian language. When he spoke to his mother on the phone, Telugu would not come to him. He was saying something or other. The mother could not follow, poor woman. She handed it to the father. I have to stay here 5 more years. I have to study more. What he had gone to study, that very thing, was not finished yet. He sat eating on the money his father and mother sent. ‘The barber with no work shaved the cat's head!’ In this way he passed the time. The father sent a telegram that the mother was very serious. ‘Danger come immediately,’ he said, for otherwise he would not come. He came, afraid that if he did not go, Father might not send money again. The parents were overjoyed that their son was coming. In the letters he wrote home he kept writing lies: ‘I am not forgetting Mother; I am doing the Gāyatrī pūjā.’ At the Airport the father was there to receive him. He took him straight in the car to the temple of Kāḷī. For when he sent him to America, it was with Her blessing that he sent him. The father's hope was to take him home again with Her blessing, poor man! My son! He told him to make namaskāra. Then the son who had come from America looked at Kāḷī Mātā and said, ‘How are you madam?’ The father grew angry: ‘Curse you! Is this what you learnt and came back with? Chī! Such a one is no son of mine at all; get out!’ he said. Would he look at the Devī like this and greet Her in English with ‘How are you madam’? What arrogance! Is this humanness? This is nothing but demonic. Such people, however much they study, are not human beings at all. Children are turning out like this today. First of all there must be morality. Without it there is no life at all. The reason the country is in pieces today is that there is no Moral character. So there must be Morality. Fear of sin, love of God, morality in society. Only when these three are present do we become embodiments of the Trimūrti. However great a scholar you may be, you must not lose faith in God. He who lacks it is no better than a corpse!
