Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What are these kinds of learning that have no Śānti? What do we want with wealth that has no Śānti? What is wealth? The wealth of Jñāna. What is prosperity? The prosperity called health. What is our treasure? The treasure of perfect freedom. What is this freedom?

The Dharma of the Ātma is svadharma

Among the educated of today the idea has grown, ‘You may speak as you please, go about as you like, behave as you like, do whatever things you like.’ This, they say, is ‘freedom’. This is not freedom. Self-control is freedom. The Ānanda of the Ātma is freedom. Knowledge of the Ātma is freedom. The unfolding of the Ātma is freedom. This is how we can explain its meaning. Sva and icchā make svecchā. Sva is the Ātma; icchā is desire. The desire of the Ātma is svecchā. Neither the students nor the young people of today are journeying as far as the Ātma. They enjoy only the freedom that has to do with the body. In the Bhagavad Gītā too, Kṛṣṇa Paramātma gave two teachings, svadharma and paradharma. Today people teach that svadharma means the kṣatriya's kṣatriya dharma, the brāhmin's brāhmin dharma, the śūdra's śūdra dharma, and in this way they expound it as duties bound to differences of race, creed and caste. That is not it. Sva is the Ātma: it is the Dharma of the Ātma. The Dharma of the Ātma alone is svadharma. Paradharma means the dharma of the body. The body is inert. In it, the mind itself gives the impulse and makes it perform many actions. This is not our freedom. Our freedom is just the conduct that wins respect in society. The freedom that makes society say ‘Sai!’ is the right freedom. Knowledge of the Ātma is the right freedom. Mastery of the senses is the right freedom. Patañjali defined this very thing as ‘Yogaḥ citta vṛtti nirodhakaḥ.’ That is yoga. ‘What a yoga you were born in!’ people say. That means, ‘What a lucky fellow you are!’ God comes of His own wish to such a lucky one.

You need not go to God. God Himself keeps coming to you.
