The Good Things We Have Learnt Must Stick Fast in the Mind

In the same way, the good things we have learnt, the good things we have experienced, must be printed on the mind. Once, Uddhava brought a message from Kṛṣṇa to the Gopīs. But he could not hand that message to anyone. The Gopīs and Gopālas of Gokula were people to whose minds Kṛṣṇa's Prema had stuck fast. Uddhava was one who knew all the many Śāstras, Upaniṣads and yogas. This Uddhava said to Kṛṣṇa, ‘Swami! These Gopīs are fools with no schooling at all. They cannot understand the power of God in the least. I will go there, teach such people yoga, and through it I will surely make them behold Your own form directly,’ he said. But the Gopīs come only if someone says Kṛṣṇa has sent him; if anyone else sends, they do not come. For them there is no god at all except Kṛṣṇa. Brahmā came. They did not look. Viṣṇu came; they did not look. Śiva came; they did not look at Śiva. So the Gopīs thought, ‘How can our minds settle on those we have never looked upon?’ Kṛṣṇa alone! They had known the strength and power of Him alone. So they thought, ‘We want nothing other than Kṛṣṇa.’ Then Uddhava: ‘Kṛṣṇa! Write a note and give it to me. If You write it, they will let me come near them; otherwise they will not let me in there,’ he said. Kṛṣṇa wrote it and gave it. Saying what? ‘Dear Gopīs! My dearest friend Uddhava is bringing this note. Follow his example.’ The Gopīs opened the letter and looked. Uddhava had come in Kṛṣṇa's own chariot. It all turned into a deception. That chariot came and stopped before Yaśodā's house. Thinking Kṛṣṇa had come, the Gopīs all came to Yaśodā's house, though no one had invited them. Where is Kṛṣṇa? They had watched day and night till their eyes grew sore, and lost hope.
