In plain words
Look now, it is dark. The moment you switch on the light, darkness is not seen. Where did it go? When you switch the light off again, darkness comes. Where did it come from? It went nowhere; it came from nowhere. When there is darkness, light is not seen; when there is light, darkness is not seen. These two are only presence and absence! What is, is one alone, forever. That is Satya, and that Satya alone is untouched by the three times. Wherever we go and whatever work we do, we must not forget that principle of Satya, untouched by the three times.
Students! However many kinds of learning you master, keep one thing in view. That which is the basis of all learning. That is Adhyātmavidyā. ‘I Myself am Adhyātmavidyā,’ said Kṛṣṇa. Spiritual education is not something separate. Spiritual education must be in everything. There is a magnet. There are iron filings. The magnet seizes the iron filings in a flash. We think, ‘The magnet has drawn them nicely.’ No, no. That too is divinity itself! The power in the magnet, too, is that itself! Only if the iron is pure does the magnet draw it. Unfortunately, how do people today think? Sometimes, even if you take a magnet and set it near the iron, it does not draw it. Then what does the iron say? That this magnet has no power. Then, they say, the magnet burst out laughing! ‘You have gathered dust and rust in yourself in plenty; how am I to draw you close?’ Clean off that dust and rust, and the iron comes to the magnet automatically. Our life is like iron filings. Man's whole body is a piece of iron. We must make it clean. Not merely by bathing with soap. Inside and outside, everywhere, we must be clean. If we are like that, the magnet that is divinity seizes us in a flash. Not only does it seize, it turns that iron into a magnet. That is ‘Brahmavit Brahmaiva bhavati’. Make a pin stick to a magnet. Leave that pin there for two days. On the third day that pin becomes a magnet. By its contact, by its relationship, by its friendship, the piece of iron turned into a magnet. Such is the sacredness in what is good. People take an axe and go to the forest. They strike a sandalwood tree with the axe.
