In plain words
The Feeling of the One Ātma Alone Is True Jñāna
What is the adornment of man?
For the ocean, the waves are its adornment; for the village, its houses are its adornment; for the lake, the water lily is its adornment; for the sky, the moon is its adornment; for man, Jñāna is his adornment.
In those twenty-one days this assembly came to an end. King Janaka, renowned as karma-yogi, jñāna-yogi and rāja-yogi, was to be given the honour. As they considered, ‘Who is worthy to give this honour?’, the names of many ṛṣis were put forward. Janaka, the rāja-yogi, the king among the yogas, had the name ‘Vaidehī’. ‘To be free of attachment to the body is true Jñāna. So Gārgī alone is fit to present the honour to me,’ he said. Do you see! In so great an assembly, an assembly that such great jñānīs had entered, among the scholars who had come to behold this boundless splendour, it was from Gārgī's hand that he received the honour. Woman and man are only a difference of the body! Jñāna is the same for all! God is the same for all! The goal is the same for all! There is no difference of female and male. There is no difference of childhood, youth and old age. There is no difference of lineage. There is no difference of āśrama at all. What exists is One alone: ‘Ekaṃ sat viprāḥ bahudhā vadanti.’ The feeling of the one Ātma alone is true Jñāna. It is not won so easily. But we must make the effort. Keep walking and walking, and you will reach the goal.
Sing it and sing it, and the melody grows ever richer; eat it and eat it, and the neem turns sweet.
