In plain words
By the king's command he again brought gold coins and gave them as a gift. Then the player: ‘O King! Is this all the gift for my dancing? I want much more,’ he said. The minister said: ‘Yesterday you came in the garb of a sannyāsī. You said you wanted nothing. Today you say you want still more. What is the inner meaning of this?’ Then he said, ‘Conduct worthy of the garb is needed. Behaviour worthy of the name is needed. Today I am a dancing girl. I hope that a reward worthy of my acting will come to me. Yesterday I came dressed as a sannyāsī. For that, the tyāga and Vairāgya worthy of it had to be there! But today I am a dancing girl. Conduct worthy of the time, behaviour worthy of the name: these two joined together are the dance,’ he made plain.
Born as human beings, we must show human values
You have been born as human beings. You must act as befits a human being. You must live with humanness. This is what Śaṅkara taught. For each garb its own conduct is very necessary. For each form its own behaviour is most essential. O men! You have taken on the human form. You must show human values. You must develop human values. Otherwise what is the use? It is a great disgrace to humanness. That is ‘the proper study of mankind is man’. What is this mankind? What are human values? Thoughts, words, action: the oneness of these three is the true meaning of humanness. In Vedānta they called this very thing trikaraṇa-śuddhi. From the oneness of these three Prema arises. Once this Prema arises in us, the heart-lotus blossoms. As soon as this heart-lotus blossoms, you become one who has given up every tie. So in those to whom Vairāgya has not come, the heart-lotus has not blossomed. The reason the heart-lotus does not blossom is just that the Prematattva has not grown in it! Because there is no Prema, he lives as a beast.
