In plain words

The cruel beasts that roam the forest have no Prema. Just this the little boy Prahlāda tells his father. ‘Father! You have learnt many branches of learning. You have read a great deal of Vedānta. You have read the śāstras. But you do not behave like a human being. The beasts in the forest have kindness and compassion. With no feeling that this is the son you fathered, the wife you wedded, you torment them. The beasts of the forest are far better than you,’ he said. One who torments others and suffers himself is the equal of a beast! That is why: be good. First of all, you be good. Do good. By the principle of these two, your life becomes good. If you want life to be good, you must begin on good qualities. In this way Śaṅkara set out and went to many regions, taught Advaita in many ways, gave courage and daring to people laden with sorrow, and went on teaching human values well. Because their guru was giving teachings of this kind, the disciples who were with him also each recited a śloka in the Bhaja Govindam. They too became absorbed in it. In the Bhārata of that time the doctrine of Advaita became firmly established. But little by little, once again, as this modern age began, the faith of Advaita went on cooling.

As Prema for God grows, Vairāgya comes

Embodiments of Prema! I am not telling you to take sannyāsa. Nor am I telling you to attain Vairāgya. While you carry out your duty, set your aim on God and recognise the truth that there is one root for everything. When you recognise this truth, a kind of Vairāgya begins. That is all; Vairāgya does not come by force. As Prema for God grows, Vairāgya comes. This detachment comes easy. It lies just in the turning of our Manas. This is a lock's key. Put the key, turn left side opens, turn right side, locked. Same lock, same key. turning difference. So lock is bondage. Opening is liberation. So: ‘Manayeva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ’; the Manas itself is the root cause of this.
