In plain words
Yet if we are to experience this truth in a worldly way, we must try to recognise certain kinds of truths. The puruṣārtha alone is the fulfilment of this. This itself is the supreme end. What are these puruṣārthas? On the worldly path, in this natural world, the Upaniṣads have long taught that Dharma, artha, kāma and Mokṣa are the puruṣārthas. The Upaniṣad taught that these very puruṣārthas are the fulfilment that teaches the supreme goal. But man, unable to recognise the truth of this word, makes up many different meanings, forgets the real meaning, and takes up only what does harm. What does puruṣa mean? In the worldly sense, people think the puruṣa is the one who wears pants, a shirt and a dhotī. When one teaches that these puruṣārthas must be won, women may grow somewhat anxious, asking whether there is no room at all for them in this. The root cause of such rivalry is simply not knowing the right meaning of the word ‘puruṣa’! ‘Puruṣa’ means ‘Ātma’. ‘Puruṣa’ means ‘consciousness’. ‘Puruṣa’ means ‘prāṇa’. So the word ‘puruṣa’ carries that much meaning. To attain the puruṣārtha is to attain the supreme goal. To know the Supreme Principle is just to recognise the Ātmatattva! The power of consciousness is present in all beings. To bring that power of consciousness to direct realisation is itself the puruṣārtha. To recognise the Ātmatattva shining everywhere in all beings is the puruṣārtha. The divine radiance on which the measure of the five elements rests is itself this puruṣārtha. Only when one recognises such an inner meaning will there be no room for argument and counter-argument over the word puruṣārtha. The inner meaning is of the nature of Śiva and Śakti, said the Upaniṣad.
In Every Body the Oneness of the Inert and of Consciousness Lies Contained
In this world one thing is the inert, the second is consciousness. Prakṛti is inert; the Ātma alone is consciousness. This very Prakṛti is woman. Consciousness itself is man. In every body this oneness of the inert and consciousness lies contained. The inert thing called women is the body itself.
