Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

In this time between, to think everything ‘mine, mine’ is itself the great Ajñāna. All is God!

God is the Dweller in your heart

Once, when Samartha Rāmadās, Tukārām and Mīrā were living at the same time, they went on searching for paths, asking how they might attain God. Tukārām said: ‘Swami! When I do japa, the monkey-like Manas runs off somewhere or other. I cannot do japa, I cannot practise dhyāna, I cannot practise yoga, I cannot read the books, I cannot gain Jñāna. But one thing alone stays with me for ever. Prema alone stays with me. With this sacred Prema I can bind You fast. With anything other than this we cannot bind You. You yield to Prema alone.’ Those who do not know what Jñāna is teach it in many ways from their acquaintance with books. Jñāna, yoga, dhyāna, tapas: all these are practised with Manas as their support! Manas itself is a mad monkey. Will sādhanas done with it be good rather than mad? Pushing Manas aside and trusting the heart, you must develop Ānanda. Where does God dwell? He is the Dweller in your heart. When Draupadī was being dishonoured in the full assembly, she said, ‘O Dweller in Dvārakā!’ She said, ‘Roamer of Bṛndāvana, Wanderer of Mathurā!’ But God, Kṛṣṇa, did not appear. She grew weary. When she was left without strength, she said, ‘Dweller in the heart!’ The moment she said ‘Dweller in the heart’, He appeared. ‘Swami! Till now I prayed in so many ways, I praised You. But You did not appear to me. When I said “Dweller in the heart”, You appeared. What is the inner meaning of this?’ she said. ‘Draupadī! The devotee's own words send Me far away. The devotee's own words bring Me near. When you say “Dweller in Dvārakā”, I have to go to Dvārakā and come back; I have to prove your word true. I have to give your word its value, have I not? I am coming after going to Dvārakā; that is why I was late. You say “Wanderer of Bṛndāvana”.
