Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

That Ātma itself is the principle of Prema. In the world there are four puruṣārthas, called Dharma, artha, kāma and Mokṣa. Man spends his life longing for these four alone, but he forgets the principle of Prema, the fifth puruṣārtha. Only when we attain supreme Prema, the fifth puruṣārtha, will the whole world be in lasting well-being. Where there is Prema, there is no room at all for hatred. Where there is Prema, there is no place for envy. These bad qualities, bad thoughts and evil broodings have no place at all in Prema. If ever there are bad thoughts and evil broodings in a man, this Prema runs away. This is a single chair! Two cannot sit on it. Man's heart is one alone! When Prema alone sits in that heart, no other quality can enter it. The heart is steady, tender and pure. Today man is turning this heart, filled with such Prema, into a musical chair. Today one Swami, tomorrow another Swami, after a few days yet another Swami. Today one japa, the next day another japa: if you keep changing like this, how can you recognise the steady principle of the heart? In any situation at all, we must hold to the heart as a single chair.

The power of Prema itself makes the world one

Diseases and attachments arise in man. The reason for this is simply that physical desires have grown! Today desires have come to be without any meaning. Man prays for his own sake, but for the sake of the world he does not pray at all. Society is very important. The country is of great importance. We must recognise the welfare of society and act on it. Without society, the individual does not flourish at all. The power in that individual is Prema alone! That power of Prema itself makes the world one. What is the reason that so many thousands have come in here? Prema alone is the root cause. Without this Prema you could not have come so far. What is this Prema like? It is a Prema of giving and taking.
