Passage 1

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Not only does it give fruit for as many days as it lives; even in death it gives its body, split open. For the spirit of tyāga, the trees themselves are the gurus: these words tell the plain truth.

Students!

Life is precious. Life is worth living. Life is an ideal. In such a life the chief quality is tyāga. Without tyāga the world can have no good fortune of plenty at all. The root cause of the troubles, the sorrows, the griefs, the fears and confusions that have broken out in the world today is selfishness itself! Only when we give up this selfishness and self-interest will the world be in plenty.

The one who takes the good as his ideal and puts it into practice is the truly educated man

For three days now, in our Institute, they have been holding a workshop called Rural development. What is the meaning of this thing called Rural development? The students must recognise this. Only when we recognise the question, ‘What is a village, and what is a town?’ will the matter of Rural development be well understood. A village, in the opinion of some, is a place where people live having built just a few houses, scattered here and there, on a wide stretch of land. The land is wide, the houses few. And what is a town? The land is little, the houses many. In the villages there is a fine atmosphere for people to live in.
