In plain words

‘I am coming back next week. Send word at once of whatever you want.’ The fourth wife asked him to bring the very latest jewels and saris. The third wife asked him to bring from there books on the lives of great souls. The second wife: I am unable to bear my diseases. Bring the medicines for my disease, she asked. The first wife wrote, ‘I want nothing; come back here safely.’ The husband came. To the fourth wife he handed over saris and jewels. To the third wife he brought books and gave them. To the second wife he gave medicines. After that he went to the first wife's house and stayed right there. At that the remaining three wives grew angry. ‘Why are you staying there? Why should you not come here?’, they demanded. Even with one wife, family life is very hard. With two, it goes without saying. With three, it is like Śrī Rāmacandra going off to live in the forest. And with four wives, there is no need to grasp it. All three went on quarrelling with him. Then he said: ‘Look here! What you asked for, I gave you. What you asked for: jewels and saris. What you asked for: books. What you asked for: medicines. This one asked for me alone, so I have gone and stayed with the one who asked for me’, he said. God is like this. To the one who says, ‘O God! Give me riches and wealth’, He gives riches and wealth. If another asks for Jñāna, He instructs them in Jñāna. To cure disease, He provides medicines, has a Super Speciality Hospital built, and keeps handing it over to them. And to the one who says, I want You alone, He comes near. That is the ārti, the arthārthi, the jijñāsi. Whatever we ask for, God gives all of it. But these are not what matter to us. He Himself is what matters. If God is ours, we can gain all that we need. Real wealth is God, real health is God. Man must make a fitting effort to seek such a God. For what? You came from God alone; you must go back to God alone. So many have gathered in this hall. Where have they come from? They have come from all countries, Japan, Italy, France. But however happy they may be here, by the time the money they brought is spent, they go back.
