In plain words
Science and the craving of the senses
Students! Young men! Young women!
If the country is to be shaped in a sacred way today, the ability to do it is yours alone. The strength and capacity to wipe out all the unrest that has spread through the world today lie in you yourselves. What we must protect today is not the country, but Satya and Dharma. If you protect Satya and Dharma, that very Satya and Dharma will protect the country. The strength and capacity to protect Satya and Dharma lie in the young women and young men alone. You must put this truth well into practice, share with everyone the Ānanda that comes from that practice, and through that make the spiritual principle grow. Today in this country the spiritual principle looks laughable. What is the reason? Today science and technology have advanced. You think it is all technology, but it is trick-knowledge. Through this alone our whole life is slipping away. We think of it as something that gives joy then and there, but through it great dangers are arising. How did our forefathers live? What peace and contentment did our forefathers enjoy? In those days they did not know what unrest was. They did not know what fear was. What is the reason? They took refuge in Satya and Dharma. When we take refuge in these two, there is no way for fear to enter us. Today, however gifted a man may be, however clever, however learned, it is fear, fear at every moment. This science has grown very great. The higher science has risen, the lower sense has sunk. You see that science has grown, but you do not think how far sense has sunk to a low class. You must recognise the difference between this science and spirituality. Spirituality is a full circle. Where it set out, it comes back to that very place and stops. It is whole. When you rub out half of it, it is in the shape of a semicircle, C. This semicircle C they called science. It sets out from one place and stops at another. It does not come back. In between lies a bottomless unrest. The root cause of this unrest is this very science. Many praise and extol science. For everything there is a limit. It is good that science grows. It is good to set up a system of education that serves the people. All this technology is needed. But it is going beyond its limits. What has come about through this science? They are developing atom bombs, hydrogen bombs, star wars and all such things. All these are efforts made in order to kill. They are only efforts that make fear grow. Even an insect can do harm. Must they make such huge efforts in order to kill! Must they spend so many crores! How good it would be if they spent on the people the money they spend on this! Because one country made one, another country makes another atom bomb. If everything comes to stand on bombs in this way, the world itself will be burnt to ashes.
Dharma is the chief weapon of the people of Bhārata
A fine illustration. In the Mahābhārata there are the Pāṇḍavas. The eldest of them is Dharmaja. After Dharmaja, Bhīma. After Bhīma, Arjuna; after Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva. Of these five, the remaining four all followed Dharmaja. If we take comparisons from the world today, those who have developed bombs are the Americans and the Russians. The Americans are like Arjuna. Arjuna had the power to wield many weapons and missiles and burn everything to ashes at one stroke. Bhīma is very strong. Strength of arm, strength of intellect, strength of the mace. Let us think of these as the Russians. They think, do they not, that Bhārata has done nothing? Bhārata is like Dharmaja. What is it we must do today? We must make Dharma grow. If we make Dharma grow, those who have strength of arm and strength of intellect will surrender to Dharmaja. We must not harm anyone in any way. We must not hurt anyone. If we follow such Dharma, we need no bombs. We need no weapons or missiles. Dharma is the chief weapon of the people of Bhārata. Satya is the crown of the people of Bhārata. For the people of any country, Satya and Dharma are very much the measure. For the people of every country, Satya is one. Satya is truth. American truth, Russian truth, Pakistan truth, India truth: is there any such difference? No. Satya is one! There is no difference at all. But the people of every country must follow Satya and Dharma. If they follow these two, there will be no troubles or upheavals of any kind.
