In plain words
The root of doubts about divinity is attachment to the body
One day in Gokula there came a torrential downpour. Then Kṛṣṇa, a little boy, called everyone together. “I shall lift up this mountain. Shelter your heads beneath it,” He said.
‘He is a boy; the hill is vast, the weight immense; can he bear it? So you doubt, and fear to stand beneath it; no need for that! Should this whole round of the earth, with its mountains, its oceans and its creatures, fall upon it, My hand would not tremble, kinsmen! Stand beneath it in gladness.’
Those who believed Kṛṣṇa's words went there. But some doubted: “How can this one carry so huge a mountain?”
Once Balarāma thought up a trick to make Yaśodā recognise Kṛṣṇa's divinity. “Mother! Kṛṣṇa has eaten earth,” he told her. Yaśodā caught Kṛṣṇa by the hand: “Kṛṣṇa! Is there no butter in our house? Is there nothing here that you need? Why did you eat earth?” she scolded. Then Kṛṣṇa too, revealing His divinity in a veiled way, spoke to His mother:
‘Mother! Am I a baby, to eat earth? Am I hungry? Am I mad? Do not believe in your heart what these people say; it is to have you beat Me that they make up this tale and tell it. If not, smell My mouth and its breath, and if My words prove false, then punish Me!’
“Mother! You see Me as an ordinary boy. I am no little boy, nor am I mad. Look at My mouth,” and He opened His mouth. All the worlds appeared to her in Kṛṣṇa's mouth.
‘A dream? The Māyā of Viṣṇu? The purpose of some other will? Or the truth? Have I lost the power to think? Am I not Yaśodā? Is this some other place? How small the boy is! Yet the whole cosmic egg lies in his mouth, ablaze: what can be the cause? It is a great wonder to ponder!’
“Am I having some dream? Or is this the Māyā of Viṣṇu? Why does it appear like this?” she wondered, full of doubt. As long as attachment to the body is in us, such doubts about divinity will keep arising in us too. So we must give up attachment to the body, foster attachment to God, and put our faith in the feeling of the one Ātma. But not everyone can reach so holy a state. The Gopīs alone lived by this feeling of the one Ātma.
The Gopīs' hearts were like butter
Once Kṛṣṇa sent a message to the Gopīs through Uddhava. Uddhava said, “Gopīs! Come and hear Kṛṣṇa's message.” Then the Gopīs, “Uddhava! Our hearts are filled with feelings of Prema for Kṛṣṇa. Our feeling is merged in Kṛṣṇa. We have no other feeling left with which to hear this message. So take the road you came by and go back to Kṛṣṇa Himself,” they said. One day, while they were playing with Kṛṣṇa in Bṛndāvana, Kṛṣṇa suddenly vanished. Then the Gopīs went to every plant and every flower, asking:
‘The dark one, the one with lotus eyes, the one who showers the nectar of compassion on us, the one with the peacock feather spreading on His crown, the one whose face is lit by a smile: such a one has come and stolen all we have; jasmines, He is not behind your bushes, is He? Do tell us!’
