In plain words

Another man came that way and felt sorry for him: “Oh, poor man! He must have had fits like me and fallen down!” After a while a sannyāsī came: “Ah! This man must be some great soul. What good fortune he has! He is resting in nirvikalpa samādhi. It is my good fortune to be given the service of such a great soul,” he said, and sat down pressing the man's feet. Vivekānanda stood at a distance and watched all this. He recognised that good and bad are in man's own feeling and not outside. “Alas! All this time I have been doubting Rāmakṛṣṇa in so many ways. The fault is all mine; there is no fault at all in Rāmakṛṣṇa,” he said, full of remorse. At once he went home. He bowed to his mother: “Mother! I left my most holy guru for no reason and came away. This is nothing but the fault of my own intellect. So if you give me leave, I will go back to that great soul and serve him,” he said. “Do as you wish, my son!” his mother agreed.

Everything man sees outside is only the reflection of his own inner feeling. He reflects his own feelings onto God as well, and deludes himself that God too may be like him. The fault is his own; there is no fault at all in God. God is beyond all thought, without form, without guṇas. Because He is caught by no measure at all, God was also called the Immeasurable. About God, each may think as he pleases. It brings Him neither gain nor loss. Today each person depends on his own feelings, not on God's will. Those who follow God's will and God's wish, they alone are the true devotees.

Only one who gives has the right to receive

Earlier, Chittibabu asked in his speech, “Swami! Give us good intelligence and a good intellect.” He asked, ‘Give us that, give us this,’ but he did not say what you will give. First we must speak of what we give to God. God will give anything; He will give whatever you want. But the right to receive must be in you, must it not! If you go to the cashier at the bank thinking that he has plenty of money in his hands, and say, “Sir! Give me some money,” will he give it? He will not. When you write a cheque for what you have deposited in your name, then he gives you money. If you have not deposited anything at all, how will he give you money?! In the same way, you must deposit Prema and purity with God and hand in the cheque called prayer. Only then can you receive a sacred result from God. If the stamp and the address on an envelope are right, it will go anywhere, however far, and reach its place. In the same way, on the envelope of your prayer, the stamp of faith and the address of Prema must be right. See that there is no impurity at all in your mind. If you put a piece of iron in the earth, ‘dust’ settles on it and rust … To remove that rust, you must put it in the fire.
