Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So the mind too has the quality of wandering. What draws the world is the mind. What draws Jñāna is the sun. So man must become one who shines with Jñāna, not one who shines in the world. Do not live it out for the world; turn it to accord with God. That is true humanness. If you cultivate this kind of humanness from this new age, from this year, you will be of great use to the country. Enter whatever field you will. But do not move your heart from its place. Only then will you have won lasting fame. There is no need of this birth to gain what does not last. ‘Among all creatures, birth as a human is hard to gain.’ Having taken a human birth so hard to gain, if you go on enjoying the world, which is untrue, impermanent and passing, when will you ever attain the eternal Satya?

The years of studenthood are very precious

Students! This age is very great; it is called the golden age. It must not be wasted. When time is wasted, the whole body goes to waste. So time itself is the form of God. Time waste is life waste. Time is GOD. Don’t waste time. So go on fulfilling your duties without wasting time. Respect your elders. Love your mother and father. Do service to society. That is true duty. Only when you cultivate humility and obedience of this kind does education have meaning. ‘Vidyā vinaya sampanne’. Humility is very necessary for education. That which teaches good qualities, good intelligence, devotion to Satya, Bhakti, discipline and the carrying out of duty is education. Without such qualities, what is the use of calling people educated? Through this education we must cultivate humility. We must respect elders. We must speak good words. You can’t always oblige but you can speak always obligingly. Speak without hurting others. Nor should you hurt your own mind on their account. Be happy yourself. Make others happy. ‘Blessed is he who goes his way without hurting others and without being hurt himself,’ it was said. You must go on leading your life in this way. Doing pūjās, singing bhajans and doing dhyāna are what Bhakti is taken to mean, but they are not true Bhakti.
