Passage 4

In plain words

Man must not try to talk with just anyone. Talk with a person who holds feelings that help your own. Through too much talk and through a discontented vision, the heart becomes impure. So he cannot attain Śānti at all. This is the year of Śānti. What must we do to attain Śānti? First of all, change your vision into a sacred one. Next, sacred feelings must arise in us. Through those feelings, sacred words must come from us. Only through the oneness of these three does humanness find its fulfilment. This is what they meant by “the proper study of mankind is man”. Vision, feeling and word: the three must become one. Now we must recognise the oneness between vyaṣṭi and samaṣṭi. What is society? It is oneness. A crowd of many people gathered together is called society. Who is an individual? One person who lives apart is called an individual. This is one life; when many such lives come together, that is society. What is the bond between this society and the individual? When we recognise the oneness of the two, the individual is society. When ten such individuals come together, it forms a society. When one stands alone, you cannot call it society. Whether you think of society or of the universe, it is human oneness that pervades the universe. So only when the individual is first set right is society also set right. Only when the individual is good does society become good. What makes an individual good? Sacred vision, sacred feelings, sacred word: the oneness of these three must arise in us. If you want to recognise the divinity within your humanness, first of all set your vision right. It is through this vision that impure feelings surge up in man in great numbers and make him unclean. What is the reason such feelings arise in man? In truth there is no reason for bad feelings to arise in man. The reaction of his own vision is the root cause of his feelings.
