In plain words

After he passes the M.B.A. he will be a big officer. He will marry the daughter of a big family": in this way they make plan after plan. All such plans are negative plans. What did he study for? For a job. What is the job for? To take a big salary. What is the salary for? What does a man on his own need a salary for? So a bond must be made for him. Besides the bonds they already have, a bond must be made for this. It is of this that the Buddha said in those days, "My relatives, my parents, my friends, all of them together tied a bond on me and sank me in this sin." "It is for release from that bondage that I am struggling today." "What is your bond? Who made it?" His father, Śuddhodana. Because the scholars had said, "Your son will become a great yogi," he devised all kinds of schemes to keep him from becoming a yogi, and married him to the daughter of his wife's younger brother. What did he do it for? If he is married, he will stay on a certain path. He will not enter Vairāgya. So he made a bond to keep Vairāgya from coming to him. What is the bond for? To keep Vairāgya from coming. After the bond is made, people say, "Swami, release me from my bond." Having tied it yourself, how is it to be released? In human life everything becomes a bond. Ask any parents you like. "Why are you so worried, sir?" "Alas, we have to get our son married. It is a big responsibility. We must be rid of this bond," they say. "Well then, you got married, didn't you? Are you free of bonds? Are you enjoying peace and happiness?" If someone puts this question, he says, "I don't want this family life." He himself says, "I don't need this family life." He rushes ahead to tie it on his children. Think how great a betrayal this is. Can what is bad for him be good for his son? If it is bad for him, it is bad for his son too. If it is good for him, it is good for his son too. So responsibilities of this worldly kind keep growing and growing. Bondage is not getting married, nor setting up a household, nor building a house, nor doing a job: none of these is bondage.
