In plain words
There is no use in your grieving over the result. There is no use in your rejoicing at the result. All these results are only the result of your saṅkalpas. Its reaction, resound, and reflection. So we must shape our saṅkalpas to be sacred. There is no use in saying Rāma Rāma once a year. Do you eat once a year? Not at all. How many times a day do you eat? If you give so many kinds of food to this transient, impermanent body, should you not give food to the mind? So thought of God is the food fit for the mind. When you feed the body and fail to feed the mind, it grows very weak. You paint the cart and decorate it handsomely. But you give the horse no fodder. Is it the horse that pulls the cart? Or the cart? You must feed the horse that pulls the cart too. To drive the cart called the body, you must feed the horse called the mind well. So: bhikṣānnaṃ deharakṣārthaṃ, vastraṃ śīta nivāraṇaṃ. All these are for the body alone. All the actions we do today are actions done for the body. But the chanting of the Name, done without anyone knowing, is the food that gives the mind strength. It is visible to no one. No one can watch it. No thieves can steal it. No king can seize it. Such a divine power is in man. Though so sacred a power is in him, man, unable to know it, lives a wasted life. As much as you scramble for wealth, do you scramble that much for God? No. Day and night, giving up food and drink, you take all kinds of pains for wealth. ‘Even a man worth crores eats only rice with salt; he will not swallow glittering gold.’ Though he is worth crores, he eats curd rice and salt; can he eat gold? For anyone at all, food is just food. Through this wealth we do not gain the least Śānti. Of course there must be some wealth. It is some support for physical life. But it is not eternal, true Ānanda.
