In plain words

The Name of God brings Ānanda even when there is no food. Not only that: it cures diseases, and it carries you across the ocean of saṃsāra. Only by remembering the Name of God is it possible to cross this ocean called saṃsāra with ease. However long a boat stays in the water there is no danger; but if water gets into the boat, the boat sinks. In the same way, you may be in saṃsāra. But if saṃsāra gets into you, that is dangerous.

The Pandit and the Boatman

Once a pandit had to cross the Godāvarī and go to another village on urgent business. He called a boatman and got into his boat. This pandit was in the habit of always talking about something or other. After they had gone some way, unable just to sit, to the boatman: “Well, my man! How are the politics in your village? Who won in the elections the other day?” he asked. “Swami! I know about the note, not about the vote. Somebody gave me ten rupees, and I voted for them. Beyond that I know nothing at all of who won or who lost,” he said. Then the pandit: “You fool! Born in this Kali age, if you do not know about politics, what is the use of living? A quarter of your life has gone into the Gaṅgā!” he said. “If it has gone, let it go, Swami; it does not worry me at all,” said the man, and he gave himself to rowing the boat. A little later this pandit: “Hey! In the rush of work I forgot to put on my watch before I came. What time is it now?” he asked. “Swami! How would I know the hours?! From the moment I get up at dawn I do my work, and by nightfall I sleep soundly. So I have no use for a watch; I do not even know how to read the time,” he said. “You fool! To wear on the wrist at least a watch that does not run is the fashion in this Kali age! And on top of that, you say you cannot so much as read the time. So half of your life has gone into the Gaṅgā!” said the pandit.
