In plain words

The whole court was silent. Then Akbar put another question to Bīrbal. “Bīrbal! What is the reason there is no hair on the palm of my hand?” he asked. Bīrbal gave a fine answer to this. “Lord! Giving to everyone is your very nature. Because you are always giving something or other to others, all the hair on your hand has fallen out,” he said. “Oho! If that is so, there is no hair on the hands of anyone in this court either!” said Akbar. “Lord! The hands of everyone in this court are the very hands that receive what you give. You go on giving without cease. We go on receiving. So there is no hair left on our hands either,” he said. “But there is no hair either on the hands of those who cannot take what I give!” said Akbar. “Lord! The fools and the luckless, who have not the fortune to receive what you give, see those who receive it and keep wringing their hands in envy. That is why the hair on their hands has fallen out too,” he said. With this answer Bīrbal dealt a sound blow to the commander, the counsellors and all the other ministers. The courtiers were amazed at his cleverness and his skill with words. Akbar honoured him grandly.

The answers Bīrbal gives may be true, or they may not. But for the moment they bring satisfaction to those who hear them, and give them joy.
