In plain words
Faith Alone Is the Root of Victory
You can only talk of a crore of things, but they do not do even one! Even great, great scholars, even intellectuals, can only talk; they cannot do. There was once a great scholar. Every day a milkmaid used to bring milk to that scholar's house and hand it to him. One day at 7 o'clock, another day at 8 o'clock: in this way she brought it and delivered it at all different times. The scholar grew angry. ‘Mother! I have fixed a proper time for my pūjā. When you bring the milk at that very proper time, I can offer the abhiṣeka and the other rites of worship and be content. You are bringing it at all different times, so my pūjā is being hindered,’ he said. The milkmaid said, ‘Sir! On the way I come by, a big river stands in the way. I have to come across that river by boat. Some rich man. To anyone else who is wealthy, they give a seat in that boat first. Only on the second trip do they give them to people like us. So, since it is a journey I make by boat, I am not able to come on time,’ she said. The scholar grew angry.
‘Silly girl, must you depend on a boat to cross a small river? If you come saying ‘Oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya’ to yourself, the river itself will make way for you,’ he said. By this eight-syllable Name you can cross even the river easily and come. You can come on time, and I can perform my pūjā on time. Then the milkmaid: Sir! This easy way, this clever way, I did not know before. She trusted the scholar's word completely, that milkmaid. ‘From tomorrow I will rely on this and bring the milk on time,’ she said, and set off. Even as she went, she kept rehearsing, that is, testing, the greatness of this Name.
She closed her eyes. Saying to herself ‘Oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya’, ‘Oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya’, ‘Oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya’, she walked on and reached the other bank. From that day on the milkmaid brought the milk on time. He saw her bringing it on time. He was astonished. This scholar. ‘How are you coming now.
