In plain words

We must not decide that our college runs only from eight in the morning to three in the afternoon. If the need comes, stay on till four o'clock. Going home, what work will you do there? There is no work for you to do when you get home. Do the work you would do at home right there. Then you will have set many people right. You will get a good name too. You will earn the name of a true guru. Today ‘guru’ has come to mean those who are heavy. We must not become such heavy gurus. We must shape the students well. All these little children are living at Alike and Muddenahalli. We must look after them with still greater care. If the little sapling comes up well, the whole tree will be well. But if the little sapling grows bent, the whole tree grows bent. We must bring about discipline in them. Many of you know this. A snake gourd sets its tiny fruit. As soon as it forms, we tie a small stone to it. By the weight of that stone the snake gourd grows straight. As the snake gourd grows bigger, the stone too must be made bigger. When the stone is tied in this way, the snake gourd comes out well, with no bends. It looks lovely, just like a snake. It is a great joy to look at. When it is a joy to look at, will it not be a joy to eat? Bring home a snake gourd full of bends and the very sight of it is repulsive. When it is repulsive even to look at, will it not be repulsive to eat? First of all, you must keep the look good. With this, every single thing falls into place. The mind is filled with joy. On what does the joy of the mind depend? Not on the objects of this world. Not on the affairs of the world. All this is artificial. What is the chief reason sorrows come to man today? Only the anxious thoughts of the mind. 90% of man's illnesses come about purely psychologically. You must give that no room at all. You must experience it with full heart. It is in artificial life that the psychological sets in. Those who pride themselves on being very clever have every kind of doubt bred and stored up in them. The doubts that are in him are not to be found in anyone else at all. Developing great cleverness is not what matters for us.
