Passage 18

In plain words

We must develop only the intelligence that is of use to others. We must develop only the intelligence that is needed. You are hungry. If you heap everything on your plate, you cannot eat it. Serve yourself as much as you can eat. Why waste it? In the same way, you must take just what is enough. You must keep your cleverness within some bounds. Cleverness beyond measure spoils the mind. ‘He is very clever; he is getting good marks. He is getting a 1st class,’ people think. The one getting those 1st class marks is all doubts from foot to head. We must not trust them at all. If we trust that cleverness, we too will be spoilt. Where must we put that cleverness to use? We must use it in matters that help others. When your cleverness brings you marks, Ahaṅkāra swells. Ahaṅkāra is a fall downward. You must give this Ahaṅkāra no room. Bigger than all others is the enemy ego. When this Ahaṅkāra comes in, people cannot do any good work. You must drive Ahaṅkāra away altogether. You must give Ahaṅkāra no room at all. If there is Ahaṅkāra, no one will love you. Even your mother will not love you. Even your wife will not love you. Even your children will not love you. As long as this Ahaṅkāra is there, no one loves. Only when Ahaṅkāra goes will everyone love you. What is the reason everyone comes here? Think it over well. What is the reason? There is Ānanda here that is not in their own country, is there not! They come here only because the Ānanda that is not in their homes is here, is it not? Only because something is here that is not in their country, not in their home, not in their body, do they take all this trouble and travel here. What is that? That is Prema itself. Today the scientists in the world have multiplied. When someone speaks many thousands of miles away, it is heard here. What is the reason so much sound comes here? When someone speaks on TV in America, it is seen on TV in India. What is the reason a person so many thousands of miles away is seen here?
