But man, unable to see his own svarūpa and unable to inquire into it, searches in his madness, thinking his own svarūpa is somewhere out there. What it is like is this: he sets off somewhere to search for himself. Where can he search for himself? He has to search within himself alone. The madman who searches for himself cannot recognise himself in any place. A small example. In the waking state he experiences it as though he has moved about, talked with others, made friends and experienced Ānanda. But this direct experience has four measures. Time, action, cause and duty. He has to go from here to Bangalore. He resolved it. The very moment he resolved it, he had a car brought. He sat in the car. He travelled for 3 hours. He reached Bangalore. Time: when? He set out at 5 o'clock at dawn. Setting out at 5 o'clock, he reached Bangalore at 8 o'clock. In what did he get there? He got there in a car. The starting time, 5'o clock. The arrival, 8'o clock. The journey in what? The journey by car. The cause: what did he go for? There was some programme or other there. He went for that programme. Time; action, the travelling, three hours; cause, the programme; duty, experiencing it. What is joined with this time, action, cause and duty is itself real. This itself is experience. At night, after you ate and lay down, a dream came at ten o'clock. In that dream, a dream came as though you went to Bangalore and made your programmes there a success. You think the dream is really true. But in it there is no time, action, cause or duty. You do not know when you set out. You do not know what you did. In this, the dream state, there is no time, action, cause or duty of any kind. In the waking state it is like that. The dream is like this. Suṣupti means deep sleep. In deep sleep you carried out no cause, no duty, no action. But you experience Ānanda. Where did this Ānanda come from? In waking you carry out all actions with your body, with your physical frame. In the dream state you create your own body. All the scenes of your dream you yourself create.
