Passage 3

In plain words

The gift of this heart, mind and Buddhi is only for Śānti of the mind. When human life does not come to Śānti and security, what use is it to have everything? Today man has won the name of the highest. ‘Among creatures, a human birth is hard to gain.’ We praise this human birth as very hard to gain. Are we using in the right way the instruments that make it worthy of such praise? We do not set the mind on the right path. We do not put Buddhi to inquiry in the right way. We do not keep the heart pure. So the sleep called Śānti has gone very far from man. Happiness has gone very far from the eye. Is a life without happiness and Śānti a life at all? In this very life, all the great ones pray to gain Vairāgya.

What Is Vairāgya?

What is this Vairāgya? It is not leaving property and wife and going off to the forest. Students must be ready to understand this Vairāgya well. This gross world. We must believe that it is inert. The subtle world: this we must believe to be of the nature of Māyā. The causal form: this we must take as a reflection. Only when we recognise well the meanings of the three in this way does Vairāgya come to us naturally. But this man experiences things contrary to these three. He believes the gross world itself to be real. He takes the subtle world itself to be the true Mukti. And he believes the principle of the mind, which is of the causal form, to be Vaikuṇṭha. The gross, subtle and causal forms have no connection with man at all. He alone who is of the great causal form is God. We must believe this gross world to be inert in form. In this inert thing no consciousness is found at all. What is this life we live, trusting in this inert thing? The subtle life is Māyā. What they call Māyā is precisely that which does not exist. What is of the causal form is only a reflection. This is not the original. Since it is not the original, why should we take it for the original? So the Vairāgya in humanness: true Vairāgya comes through understanding these three well.
