In plain words
Prema, Rāma, Sāī
This Prema is just a word of two letters. These two letters themselves pervade everywhere. Another example. Vālmīki, called Prācetasa, wrote a hundred crore ślokas of the Rāmāyaṇa. But they said that through this Rāmāyaṇa humanness becomes fulfilled; whoever reads it, whoever takes it up, whoever remembers it, whoever chants it, whoever does dhyāna on it, for such people there is freedom from birth. The moment they heard this news, the three, the gods, the demons and men, came to Brahmā. ‘Lord, give us a share in this Rāmāyaṇa,’ they said. Brahmā said: I have no special favour for anyone. To me, all alike are equal. ‘Here, I will share out the hundred crore ślokas among the three worlds,’ he said. Then all of them were very happy. Brahmā is free of all difference. Brahmā is free of desire. So he went on describing those qualities. Making three portions, he shared out 33, 33, 33 crore ślokas to the three. One śloka was left over. How was he to share out the śloka? He looked into how many letters there were in this śloka. There were 32 letters in the śloka. How was he to share them among the beings of the three worlds? To the gods he gave 10 letters, to men ten letters. To the demons he gave 10 letters. Now two letters were left. How was he to give them? Then he said: My dear ones, it is not possible to share these equally among all. ‘Give these two letters themselves the names Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Śiva, Hari, Sāī, Bābā, and remember them without ceasing,’ he said. The principle at the root of everything is these two alone. That itself is Prema joined with the Ātma, the Ātma joined with Prema. This one alone is what stays permanent in every heart. All the rest are nothing but things that change. The words that man, endowed with the principle of Prema, heard from God: He said ‘mamaivāṃśo’, that is, He said, ‘All of you are nothing but My own part.’ We must believe this very thing wholeheartedly. We must trust it with all our heart. Since we believe it, we must follow it. This has come in the form called Prema. With this Prema we must make the world shine. With this Prema we must make the world peaceful. With this very Prema we must turn the universe into Dharma.
