Passage 19

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Only when you have become virtuous and rich in good conduct will you surely set the country right.

Students! You must not come here for the sake of uplifting yourselves. You must uplift the country too. You must uplift society too. Only then will your studies be fulfilled. You need not go after any wicked desires at all. One desire alone. You must take up the resolve: ‘We must achieve the fine ancient culture of Bhārata.’

Learned Men from Abroad Have All Recognised the Sanctity of Bhārata

In earlier times there were scientists such as Einstein. Max Muller remembered it many times over. ‘When the time comes for me to die, I must go to Bhārata and die,’ he said. ‘The sanctity that is in this Bhārata is in no other country,’ he said. ‘In that dust there is compassion,’ he said. ‘In that Gaṅgā there is Prema,’ he said. ‘In that soil there is compassion,’ he said. ‘I must go to such a country and die,’ he said. But is everything fulfilled the very moment it is wished for? But it did not come to him. So how fortunate you are, who are sons of Bhārata! We must not let that mother who bore such sons shed tears. So, to make her happy, you must take on the courage and the sacrifice that are needed. You must not think merely of Bhārata alone. All of it is our own country. It is one big house. In this house there are many rooms. One room America, one room Germany, one room Japan: in this way people have given each one its own name. So the whole world is one single house. It is one universal family. Bhārata too is one room. So you are living in one room. You must not wish for the welfare of that room alone. You must wish for the welfare of all the rooms. Those in all the rooms are your brothers and sisters. Brotherhood of man and fatherhood of God. You must make these two grow.
