In plain words

Where did this Ānanda come from? It sprang from you alone. People of many countries came together and showed beautifully the influence of the conditions of their own countries. They said a great deal about this culture. Our culture is love. Foster that love. Hate no one. Do not look at anyone in the wrong way. All are good. That is why Rāmakṛṣṇa told Vivekānanda — ‘What will become of my mother? What all will happen?’ he asked in every way. On the 22nd you will be able to see that drama. Rāmakṛṣṇa placed his hand on his head just once. He went into rapture. There he merged in the feeling of the Devī. He went on experiencing that divinity. After some time the rapture left him. He asks, ‘What have you done to me?’ Then Rāmakṛṣṇa spoke. ‘My dear, it is not something I did; your own Ānanda came to you like that, as reaction, as resound. You are contemplating divinity. That itself brought about these changes; it is not something anyone else brings.’ Then he asked, Who am I? Then Rāmakṛṣṇa tells him, beautifully, joyfully. “Narendra! Narendra! You are you,” he said. You are not Narendra. That is the name your parents gave to this body. It is the form your parents gave. But this is not your own svarūpa. You are you. You are you alone. What one must know today: one must know one's own Principle.

Today, getting up at daybreak and looking at the paper, people fill their heads with the state of different countries. You enquire into the state of people of other countries, but what is the state of your own body? That is not it. You must try to know the state of your own body. Who am I. Know it. Then your vision turns to the inner feeling. You think, “I am a man of great intelligence.” How does your intelligence grow? When I was talking with Gokak, at first we went on putting questions to each other. I told Gokak, ‘Gokak, there is Jñāna in everyone. There is no one in the world without Jñāna.
