Passage 15

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You must take part in service to society. To be proud that I am a rich man is not greatness. The one who gives up is the true enjoyer. The one who indulges himself with this wealth is the true sick man. Do not become sick men like that; become men who give up. That is why the Veda said, “Na karmaṇā na prajayā dhanena tyāgenaike amṛtatvam ānasuḥ.” Are there not ever so many rich people? How many of them are feeding the poor? How many of them are having the poor taught? With a spirit of giving up you must set yourself to the work, at least to some extent. In your own villages, your own kingdoms, your own states, your own regions, you must help the poor and the women.

Work Fitting the Salary Is Itself Service to the Country

What does service mean? Sweeping the bazaars is not service. Sweeping the temples is not service. Doing Nārāyaṇa Sevā is not service. This much alone is not service. We must do our duty properly. Doing our duty in the fitting way is also a service. If you do work fitting the salary given you, that too is service. You take a salary of thousands of rupees and do not do hundreds of rupees' worth of work. How can we call it service? No, no. Do work fitting what you have taken. That itself is service to the country. That itself is the true service you do to the country. That itself is the help you give to society. You must do right service to society. If you ask how we must serve this society: feeding people is not service to society. You must see that no trouble comes to the government in any situation. Because so much money is paid out, the money in the government's treasury is running out. What do they do in order to pay you your salary again each month? They bring in loans from foreign countries to pay the salaries.

Pawning the country is not our service. We must free the country from pawn. You must see that it does not become dependent on others. You must give the people joy. This is true service. Those who have joined the Sai organisations must work so that their muscles melt and their bones wear down. If you work so that your muscles melt, you may eat till your teeth wear down.
