In plain words
Do your own service, wish for the welfare of your family, and make the efforts that fit it.
If you love God with all your heart, all your deeds go rightly
The fifth question: How will the debts of the fruits of the karma we have done be cleared?
They think of all these as a kind of debt. If you want the fruit of karma to be set aside in every case, whatever the karma, karma that cannot be cleared, harsh karma, painful karma, you can set them all aside with medicines full of Prema. That itself is Prema. There is nothing greater than Prema. If you pray with all your heart, release from karma will surely come. But some people pray. They sit in the pūjā room. They do japa, ‘Sāīrām, Sāīrām.’ Hey, has the washerman brought the clothes? The mind goes to the washerman. You are doing japa. Why should the mind come to the washerman? Then some people do japa. They sit in meditation. Smoke comes from the kitchen. ‘The cooking is burning, look!’ he says to his wife. If you do sādhana of this kind, how will it become prayer to God? All the sādhanas you do, you do with a wavering mind. Do them with the mind steady. You will surely gain the fruit. Do any sādhanas. Love with all your heart. Through Prema all diseases are cured. All sufferings are cured. All worries are cured. First of all, make Prema grow in you. How are you to make Prema grow? If you think of God as the embodiment of Prema, that Prema itself grows. But if you think of God in some other way, how will Prema grow? No; Prema alone is the right medicine for this. If you put a plant in a tin and pour water on it, what happens? It rots. But you must put that plant right into the earth and water it. In the same way, it will not do to keep the form and Name of God somewhere outside and do this. Plant it in the soil called the heart. Pour the water called Prema. It will surely grow. So you need do no other special sādhana.
